3 things I am currently obssessed with
Hi! My name is Jessica and I’m doing a guest post for the Skelly Twins blog. For those of you who don’t know me, here is a quick rundown.
I am wife to John and mom to Jett and Jay. Besides my awesome family, I love shopping (online mostly these days), finding great deals, fashion, sports, and finding fun things to do with my kids. I despise being late, wasted time (and money), bad customer service and cucumbers. I am a closet perfectionist, a procrastinator and compulsive list maker.
My blog post is about 3 things I’m obsessed with. Anyone who knows me, knows just how excited I get about things and how I love to pass that on to others. So here goes:
1. Black Friday
I have a confession, this is my biggest obsession. For someone like me, who takes more pride in how much I saved than how much I spent, this is my super bowl. There are weeks of preparation, comparing prices, tracking prices, and making lists. In years past it was much more simple. We’d get a paper on Thanksgiving day, my mom and sisters and I would circle items, make store lists with times they opened, hash out our “must get” list, our “wish” lists and our “if we have any money left” list. We’d wake at 2 am and head to the stores, stand in the freezing cold and get our shop on. These days though, you get the ads posted online weeks in advance and many prices go live way before (and sometimes even lower than) Black Friday. The goal is to get what you want for the absolute lowest price it is offered ever. It takes a lot of work to keep up with it all and I love it. My two favorite websites for tracking Black Fridaydeals and ads are bfads.net and blackfriday.bradsdeals.com.
2. Bulk grocery shopping
Now when I say bulk grocery shopping, I’m not talking about SAMs and Costco or buying a ginormous box of cereal to save a few pennies. I’m talking bulk spices, dry goods like rice, quinoa, barley, and nuts. You can save so much money!!! You probably are thinking how much money can I really save? It’s around 50% or MORE. Example: I bought bulk chili powder for 99 cents an ounce, the store brand bottle was $1.99 ounce. Also: I bought organic flax seed and spent $1.97. I saw a similar size bottle of organic flax seed at Target for almost $7! How many times have you wanted to try a new recipe but thought, I’ll spend $20 just in spices, I’m not doing that? Well, with bulk spices you can do it for cents or just a few dollars. The possibilities are endless, no longer am I limited by my spice cabinet! Exciting times at the Ligon household!
If I have no clue what I should start out with, what are some suggestions?
(chili powder, cumin, oregano, dill, onion powder, cinnamon, and rosemary)
Ex: You make a pot of white rice. You are tired of always having plain white rice. Add dill to your white rice for a great flavor.
You have a few potatoes that are about to go bad. Dice them up, rub olive oil, salt, pepper, and rosemary on them. Throw them in the oven for a great roasted potato side.
3. Mary and Martha Tea Light Shades
A friend of mine, Kristy Cunningham, sells Mary and Martha products. All their products are amazing, great quality and inspirational. One product in particular has caught my eye this season though and I can’t wait to purchase some. It the Mary and Martha tea light shades. They are so cute! I think they are the perfect hostess gift, such a fun addition to your table, and something to give that person who has it all! I am always looking for unique things to give my relatives and these definitely fit the bill! At $20 for 6 shades, it’s a great deal too. Here is a little description about them from the catalog as well as how to order them: Create an easy, elegant atmosphere on your table with our tea light shades! Shades fit easily over most stemware glasses (You can put them on top of wine glasses!). We use them without any glass at all — and just a tea light. The tea lights can be found on page 27 of our Fall Guide and page 6 and 7 of our Christmas Mini-Guide Or they can be found online at www.mymaryandmartha.com/kristycunningham, just click on Shop and unrelated to an event.
Well that’s all for this edition of What I’m Obsessed With. I hope I helped you save some money and cross a few things off your Christmas list! Until next time!!
