A New Twist on “Anchor Babies” in the US
I was reading the news tonight and came across this story on CNN and I thought to myself “What on earth?”
Most people have heard of the term “anchor baby” before. An anchor baby is a baby that was born in the US to non US parents so that the baby would automatically become an American citizen. A non US mother giving birth to a US citizen is less likely to be deported.
The United States is one of the few countries that allows every person born on US soil to be a US citizen. So does it surprise you that people are taking advantage of this? Absolutely not. These people taking advantage of the system are obviously a lot smarter than our lawmakers in Congress who are making these rules or not changing these rules.
When I think of anchor baby, I think of poor people who are desperate to get to America and this is a solution for them to live the American dream. This article was shocking because there are people who are paying $40,000-60,000 to have a baby in the United States.
According to CNN.com
Los Angeles (CNN)Federal agents on Tuesday raided more than three dozen “maternity hotels” in Southern California where foreign women give birth, allegedly for the sole purpose of having a U.S.-citizen baby, authorities said.
The “maternity tourism” sites included apartment complexes in Los Angeles, Orange and San Bernardino counties where authorities believe the businesses housed the foreign nationals about to give birth, federal official said.
Those targeted residences are believed to have catered largely to women from China, who paid $15,000 to $50,000 for lodging, transportation and food, according to a statement by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Those fees don’t necessarily include medical care, authorities said.
According to CNN, women are promised US Birth Certificates and US Social Security Cards before they leave to go back to their home countries.
Clients are urged to fly threw touristy cities like Las Vegas in order to prevent detection for the real reason of the trip.
Why are people with money doing this?
According to the article, it is because the US Citizen status will give these children an advantage in education opportunities.
My question for you is this: Should the US allow every baby born on their soil to automatically gain US citizenship?
I am VERY interested in getting your opinion on this matter. If you are reading this post, PLEASE post your opinion on the blog. If you live outside of the US, please tell me what country you live in when you give your opinion.
