A very unique town in the South that you must visit!

If you come to Texas you probably will want to visit Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, or Austin.  These are four major cities where you are guaranteed to have lots of things to do and see.    If you have an extra day or two to spare, you should check out Fredericksburg, Texas.

Why Fredericksburg?

It is a very unique town with lots of history and character.  It was founded in 1846 by a group of German settlers and the town today still retains this German heritage.  Fredericksburg has something for everyone, adults and kids.  The local tourism board has excelled in making this town one of the premiere wine locations in America.  If you have always dreamed of going to Napa, save your money and drive to Fredericksburg.  There are over twenty four wineries to choose from!

When I met my husband, his family had a tradition where they would rent a house every Christmas in Fredericksburg.  Their family friends, JoAnn and Richard would join them with their kids.  There have been several different houses and locations and each one has had its own unique characteristics.  Whatever place we stay, we always have a great time hanging out with the family and friends and enjoying Fredericksburg and the surrounding area.

Trip Advisor describes Fredericksburg

“In the heart of Texas Hill Country, Fredericksburg is a small city with a unique German flavor in its quaint bakeries, Hauptstrasse (Main Street) boutiques and generations-old peach orchards. Weekenders from nearby San Antonio and Austin have long appreciated the charm of the city’s many B&Bs and “Sunday House” Inns. The surrounding Texas Hill Country is home to lush vineyards, making up one of the country’s largest viticultural areas.”

Where is it located?

260 miles from Houston

Waylon Jennings wrote a famous song about this place.

Luckenbach Texas, where “Everybody’s Somebody”, established as a trading post in 1849.  There is an old dance hall still in use every weekend, live music daily, a General Store and a bar.  A great place to visit, sit back under the old 500-year-old oak trees, relax and listen to live music.  Luckenbach reflects an eclectic mix of its early history, the larger than life persona of Hondo Crouch and an unrivaled legacy of great music that makes everyone indeed “Somebody” in Luckenbach. 412 Luckenbach Town Loop, on RR 1376 off US Hwy 290 East (830) 997-3224 Hours: Open 7 days a week, 363 days a year from 9 am til close. The Texas Hill Country is home to numerous wineries and vineyards and Fredericksburg is the epicenter of the Hill Country wine region. There are more than two dozen wineries and tasting rooms located in Fredericksburg and Gillespie County — not to mention dozens more wineries located within an hour or two drive of Fredericksburg. Our Gillespie County wineries have been producing a variety of quality wines that have won both state and national honors. Wine production in Fredericksburg dates back to the original settlers who used the native mustang grape to produce wines.

Here are a few:

Becker Vineyards

Inwood Estates Winery and Bistro

4.0 Cellars

Fat Ass Ranch Winery

Stay near Main Street (walking distance if possible).  This will allow easy access to the cute shops, Fredericksburg Brewery, and Hondos for live music.

Stay in a B&B rather than a hotel.

Go to Enchanted Rock.  It is beautiful and the kids (and adults) will enjoy the view from the rocks.

If you go to the wineries, take the winery shuttle that goes all day for $20.00 http://www.290wineshuttle.com/

Eat German food while visiting Fredericksburg.  The Fredericksburg Brewery has great food and a neat atmosphere.

Take a drive out to Luckenbach for the live music.
